God’s Greatest Hits

As we continue down Route 66 from Galena, Kansas, we come to the small town of Riverton.  In Session 2 of Season 3, our main stop in Riverton is Eisler Brothers  Old Riverton Store.  John and Joy will film their video here in front of this cool store that has been in operation since 1925!  That was a year before the highway through Riverton became part of Route 66!  The book of poetry that is paired with Riverton is the book of Psalms.  Psalms is a collection of the lyrics to songs that were sung in the worship of the Temple in Israel.  The book covers a period of time from when Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt, around 1,500 BC, until Israel’s return from Captivity in the 5th century BC.  During this time, thousands of psalms, or songs of worship, were written.  At a point in time, decisions were made about which psalms were going to be part of the authorized canon of Scripture.  150 were picked.  You might think of them as “God’s Greatest Hits.” 70 of those were written by David.  One was written by Moses, and one by Solomon.  The rest were written by Temple musicians.  Along with today’s short episode, the longer teaching on Psalms goes into greater detail on this amazing book.  The links to both today’s short video and the longer teaching video are below.
