The Weeping Prophet

Today’s episode takes us a little further into Oklahoma and introduces us to the second of the Major Prophets: Jeremiah.  Jeremiah is sometimes called “The Weeping Prophet.”  Why?  I think he hated his job.  He hated it so much that in the text he tells God he wish he had never been born.  Why did he hate his job?  He was sent by God to give the nation of Judah and the city of Jerusalem a message of coming disaster.  Because of the nation’s unfaithfulness, they had reach a point where they were unsalvageable.  As a result, God was going to destroy the city, destroy the Temple, and send the people into exile in Babylon.  This was Jeremiah’s main message, and people didn’t like it.  They didn’t like him.  They beat him, arrested him numerous times, and even threw him in a muddy cistern to get rid of him.  If you were Jeremiah, you would hate your job too.  Fortunately, he also had several messages of hope woven into the fabric of his message of destruction.  He speaks of a return out of exile, the coming of the Messiah, and a New Covenant that began when Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.  If you watch the short episode you will know that I am giving you two options on the more comprehensive message of Jeremiah.  One is from the Route 66 series and one is a recent message I gave at Narrow Gate men’s group on Jeremiah.  The Narrow Gate teaching is a little shorter and I think it is a little better.  The links to both are below.
